Match Preview | Cleveland SC vs Steel City FC

Match Day - Cleveland SC vs Steel City FC - July 7th, 2023

Final Home Match of the Regular Season

Get ready for an exciting match as your Cleveland SC takes on Great Lakes Conference winners, Steel City FC, in their final home match of the regular season. This thrilling encounter will take place tomorrow night at George Finnie Stadium on the campus of Baldwin Wallace University on Friday, July 7th, with kick-off scheduled for 7:00 pm EST.

Cleveland SC secured their spot in the three-team Great Lakes Conference playoffs after a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Erie Commodores FC last Friday. The following night, Steel City FC claimed the top spot in the conference with a 3-2 win against Michigan Rangers FC. These two teams clashed just two weeks ago in Cheswick, Pennsylvania, where Steel City FC emerged victorious with a 3-2 scoreline, thanks to a sixty-third-minute goal by Ryan Landry on their home turf.

Over the past two years, Cleveland SC and Steel City FC have consistently finished as the top two clubs in the former Rust Belt Conference. Additionally, in both 2021 and 2022, they faced each other in the NPSL Midwest Region Quarterfinals, with Cleveland SC advancing to the Midwest Region Semifinals on both occasions. There is a possibility that these two clubs will meet again in the Great Lakes Conference Final on July 15th in Cheswick, PA, competing for a spot in the Midwest Region Semifinals. For that to happen, Cleveland SC will need to defeat Michigan Rangers FC in the Great Lakes Conference Semifinals on Wednesday, July 12th in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Mark your calendar as we will be hosting a watch party for our playoff match against Michigan Rangers FC at Iggy's Bar in Lakewood, Ohio.

Regardless, tomorrow's match promises to be an entertaining battle, especially considering Steel City FC has only defeated Cleveland SC at home once in six attempts since 2019.

Our opponent

Steel City FC, led by Head Coach Dan Brower, has clinched their first conference regular season championship since joining the league in 2019. They currently hold the fourth national ranking with ten wins and one draw in the regular season. In their most recent match against conference contenders Michigan Rangers FC, Steel City FC secured the top spot with a 3-2 victory, courtesy of an eightieth-minute match-winning goal from Bryan Akongo. Tate Mohney and Nathan Prex lead their team's attack with five goals each.

Club Notes

Cleveland SC has been in excellent form, winning four of their last five matches, with the one loss coming against this very same Steel City FC in Pennsylvania. The team has shown tremendous improvement in front of goal, scoring fifteen goals during this period compared to five goals in their first six matches of the season. Tom Beck and Bojan Kolevski lead the charge, each contributing four goals. As the regular season comes to a close, Cleveland SC aims to delight their home fans with a victory, building momentum for the upcoming conference playoffs in Grand Rapids, Michigan, next week.
