Cleveland, Ohio - As we Spring into Summer, soccer is almost back in Northeast Ohio as Cleveland SC is back in action this Saturday at 7:00 p.m. against the Buffalo Stallions.
Following a solid season that saw the club finish with a record of 5-3-2, the club is aiming to get back into the postseason for the first time since the 2024 season.
The season opener will be an exciting test for a new squad that features plenty of talent making their club debuts at George Finnie Stadium.
Only three players on the roster for Cleveland SC are returners: goalkeeper Colin Monroe, defender Noah Sandahl, and midfielder Alec Nagucki.
Both Monroe and Sandahl are currently playing in college, as they are also teammates for the University of Detroit Mercy’s men’s soccer program.
Nagucki brings a wealth of experience back to the club, as he joined the team in 2019 and has since made appearances in 46 matches, including 10 playoff games. Nagucki has been named to multiple different all-conference XI’s in his time with the club, and is the veteran presence that the squad needs, especially with all of the new talent.
In total, there are 23 new players who will be joining the squad this season, with many young, skilled players displaying their talents in the orange and black.
The Buffalo Stallions will be an intriguing opening opponent, as the squad made its NPSL debut last season in the Great Lakes Conference, finishing with a record of 3-0-7.
Cleveland SC opened its season against Buffalo last year as well, earning a big 3-0 road victory to kick the season off. When Buffalo made the trip West to play at George Finnie Stadium, the squad notched another victory, getting a 3-2 comeback win to go 2-0 over Buffalo in the Stallions’ first season in the GLC.
Monroe is the only returning player this season who faced the Stallions last year, as the keeper appeared as a substitute in the first victory over Buffalo.
The club will be looking to start the season hot against a familiar opponent, as both the home and season slate start this Saturday, May 16, at 7:00 p.m. at George Finnie Stadium in Berea, Ohio. Both teams will be aiming to start the season hot, getting a proper beginning on the way to do something they couldn’t accomplish last season: make the playoffs.
